The HI-Fi News Test Record

Recorded onto audiophile quality 180g vinyl, the new version also includes a full-sized set-up protractor and includes an additional frequency sweep test.

Test Record specifications and features:

  • Channel identification
  • Phase check
  • Channel balance
  • Pink noise L/R
  • Anti-skate/bias setting
  • Tracking ability
  • Cartridge/arm lateral resonance
  • Cartridge azimuth
  • Residual system noise check
  • 20Hz to 20kHz frequency sweep
  • Set-up protractor
  • Recorded onto audiophile 180g vinyl

  1. Essential -- revealing-- tool for vinyl 5 Star Review

Posted by on 5th Jun 2018

If there were any justice in the world, all published turntable and cartridge reviews would make extensive use of this disc, and discuss the results fully and honestly. However, I suspect that any reviewer that did this would soon be blacklisted by all manufacturers!

The pressing itself is very good, with less than 2 millimetres peak-to-peak of eccentricity and wide groove spacing to prevent inter-groove interactions.

The disc was very clean when it arrived.

  2. Needed a test record, this is it. 5 Star Review

I needed a test record with a log sine sweep. This one has it. From the log sine sweep you can calculate an impulse response that describes both the behaviour of your TT in the time and frequency domain. I'll be using this record to generate a digital filter to correct my TT and preamp's frequency and phase response.

The the empty groove test is great to tune your TT for minimal background noise.

I don't need to adjust anti skating with my linear tonearm TT but the test tracks bring my hardware to its limits. If you hear strange noises on the test tracks then you have some problems to solve. You will not regret it when you do.

I'd never recommend tuning a TT by ear. Get this record instead and you will practice science instead of alchemy.

  5. Fantastic 5 Star Review

Does what it says on the tin.
I came back into vinyl after 30 years, bought a good tt, a decent cartridge and full of hopes turned it on- and couldn't be more disappointed.
Muddy sound, I was depressed, was thinking about returning tt.
Printed out a cartridge alignment protractor from one of the websites, easy to use, sound got better, but still imperfect.
So after good digging online, I decided to go for this LP.
Didn't expect too much, to be honest.
First protractor- I had cartridge aligned all bad!
The few minor adjustments with LP.
My only complaint would be that tracks are too short, have to go over and over.
Sorted out and put one of my lps-
    Oh My God!
    All came to life!
    Fantastic sound.
    Couldn't be happier.
    Best spend €40 ever!!!!
    Highly recommended.

    A must have.

  7. Complex and good 5 Star Review

After a number of repeated tests, resettings and trials, the end result was worth the effort.

  8. Do not be afraid of it! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 9th Jun 2016

Easy to use, very useful if your cartridge has a "narrow" sweet spot....I used it for my Goldring G1042,and although not far out adjusting by ear and hand, the Hi-Fi news record let me dial it in with a great pay off...no more "fiddling"(and the risk of stylus/cantilever damage)..well worth the outlay!

  9. HiFi News Test Record 4 Star Review

Posted by on 11th Nov 2013

Good test record. My only problem is that there is no relation given between micron and + xx dB. Cartridges are allways specified for the max. microns it can track at 315 Hz (ie. 80 uM @ 315 Hz), not ie. 300Hz +15 dB. So you do not know if the cartridge is up to its specs. Anyone know of a convertion table?

  10. Excellent 5 Star Review
