Product Overview

At last a Record clamp which works as it should

Record clamps or weights serve 2 purposes

a) They flatten warped records on the platter – thus giving your cartridge an easier ride and enabling it to maintain the same VTA (angle to the record).

b) They change the way your records sound by damping their vibration.

Most clamps flatten records successfully but have very mixed results on sound quality. As a generalisation, most they tend to enhance the bass whilst dulling down the upper midband. There is also a perceived slowing down of the sound and the decay of notes suffer.

For 25 years or so we’ve tested record clamp designs (both ours and 3rd parties) and never come across a clamp which was worthwhile to use. Then one year we were sharing a room at the indulgence show with the importer of Shun Mook and he introduced us to their record clamp. To my astonishment this actually worked and enhanced everything in the music with no downside. The only problem was that it cost £2000.

This experience got me thinking and after some interesting design experiences with previously untested materials we though it worth trying again.

What it sounds like

The result is a record clamp which makes a significant contribution to improving bass definition, weight and depth but it also enhances the midband and treble through better separation, transparency and decay of notes. This is where most other clamps cause degradation but the Origin Live clamp excels.

We are so pleased with the results that it’s a no brainer to offer this as an upgrade for all other decks. As with so many of our products this carries our guarantee of satisfaction or your money back. If you wish to hear what a well designed clamp can do for your sound quality please place an order. Should you be anything other than delighted with the results just return the clamp for a full refund.

Possible objections:

My deck will be different to the one you tested the clamp on so there is there any guarantee of improvement?

This a valid concern, however a record clamp is primarily in contact with the record rather than your deck. Although the deck will affect the vibration of the record to a large extent the effect of exerting control from the topside of the record is different. To test this point we tried the clamp on:

  • Solid platters
  • Platters topped with felt mats
  • Suspended decks
  • Non suspended decks

In all cases the improvements of the clamp were the same as listed above.

Tony Sharman Record Weight Review

“This new addition to the Origin Live accessories range is a must for every turntable, we have all seen record weights before, but not like this one, machine turned from solid banded oak with a machined lead infil , contact with the record is via the same material found in the award winning turntable mat. The specialy shaped disc has a diameter of 80 mm, to clear even the largest cartridge bodies. Weight is approx 400grams or 15 ounces which should not upset a suspended deck but it would be as well to check the level with the weight in place. The major effects of the record weight, is to kid the disc that it is much thicker and flatter than it really is, this manifests itself in increased detail, much sharper focus and a deeper cleaner base line. I could go into great detail as to why this occurs, which would explain the intricasies of it’s manufactured shape and choice of materials. Suffice it to say, it works better than most, and certainly at this price point cannot be bettered. There is but one way to find out it’s true abilities.”
