Product Description

This product is an essential accessory if you own valve kit with B9a double triodes in it. Thats it.
As I said in the introduction: this is a no brainer, if you own components that feature only B9a double triodes like the ubiquitous ECC83 (aka 12AX7) and ECC88 (aka 12AT7 and 6922) you should buy one of these. If you own a $4000 pre-amp you probably connected it to your power-amp with at least a $400 cable pair. Before you ever consider spending that again on next months flava cables buy a Tube Imp to keep your pre-amp in tune. If your power-amp features B9a double triodes as input valves, phase-splitters or drivers a Tube Imp will be worthwhile just to make sure those phase-splitters are spot on to minimise one of the nastiest distortions.
Then you can also use your Tube Imp to help you safely begin the noble art of tube rolling. It wont tell you why overpriced Western Electrics really are worth 4 times the price of Chinese rivals (different bases again) but it will enable you to keep all those miniature double triode components singing. Now you know what to spend your Christmas money on.

    As I am a tube junky (more than 400 double triodes), I needed a tester easy to use and safe so the Hicock like super tester from WWII wasn't an option. And here we have the Tube Imp....the perfect machine for tube rollers like me.
    As said in another review, sometime you need to extrapolate datas with graphs because some tubes reach HT limits even with nominal settings...
    Also an on-off switch could be great as for 6V heater tubes they never turn off completely and I have to take them "à chaud".
    But all the above are minor flaws compared to all the qualities of this little Red Imp.

    Sturdy and easy to use. Clear read out and consistent results. This tester will measure cathode-anode emission current, transductance and gain for double triode 6DJ8 and 12AU7 tubes, and their equivalents with the same pin(B9A socket)arrangement eg, 12AX7, 12AT7,6N23P,6N27P(don't put the anode voltage above 30V with this one),etc.
    It does not deliver above 12 mA cathode current and so for 6DJ8 type tubes you need to extrapolate using the characteristic graphs for these tubes. It's easy enough and the graphs can be found on the web but a reference to this, or even better, a copy of the graphs in the instruction booklet, would have been most helpful. Comparison of the two sides of the tube is as easy as a flick of a switch.
    An excellent and much needed product.

    I needed a small tube tester for testing both 12AX7 tubes used in my Guitar amp preamp stages and 6N3P/5670 tubes used in my HI-FI Amp so I bought a Tube Imp tester along with an adaptor from a company in Taiwan to convert 6N3P tube pinouts to ECC83.

    I have to say I have found the Imp really easy to use and obtained good consistent results with it. The build quality seems very good too!

    It's a shame it struggles to provide plate current greater than 10mA as some of the stronger 6N3Ps will reach 12mA. An extension to 250V on the plate voltage would have been nice too as previously mentioned. But notwithstanding this I wouldn't be without one, a very useful tool.

    A very good device. Its very simple to use. You can match your preamp tubes 12AX7, 12AT7, 12AU7 and all comparable types.
    I give 4 stars: I have only black/silver devices and the red housing stands out. A little bummer too: I like testing with 250 Volt and the Tube Imp is limit 200 Volt.

    The Imp seems like the perfect tool for grading and testing tubes like the ECC83. It's easy to use and looks very well constructed. Smooth controls and a clear readable lcd display. I was eager to try it out. Plugging in a Haarlem 12ax7, adjusting the plate voltage to 200V and the grid to -1.5V, the plate current started rising and stabilized at 1.35mA (past the 1.2mA datasheet spec). The second half was at 1.39mA. Looks like a strong well balanced 12ax7. Gm came in at (1870/1950), datasheet spec at 1600. Gain was 89 for both sides. If possible I would have liked to see plate and grid voltage readings, instead of relying on the scale by the knob indicator. After testing some 50 valves, I noticed that at lower plate voltages (100V / -1V) more weak tubes showed themselves (the previously tested Philips tubes hit 0.49mA right on spec, but it had surpassed spec at (200V / -1.5V)).

    I give it 5 stars for performing very well and the high quality build. I can fully recommend the Tube Imp to grade, weed out or just test good and bad valves under variable working conditions.
